At the start of Sunday, Cameron Smith must have believed he needed to hook a Great

White to win the 150th Open Championship by mastering the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Not just any Great White was terrifying the field, however. It was Rory McIlroy, the uncontested fan favourite,

who seemed to have the support of the whole old hamlet as he pursued the Claret Jug.

This was a 30-footer, or three tonnes of him, in "Jaws" terminology. He had kept almost all of his

he shared the lead with Viktor Hovland and was four shots ahead of the pack.

Smith, though, was the Australian man with the scraggly mullet who was not terrifying anybody despite

his résumé which included a win in the Players. Smith's prospects were minimal because of his size and

the fact that he was four strokes off the lead and McIlroy was in full swing after rounds of 66, 68, and 66.
