Ahead of training camp, Matt Eberflus issued a warning to the players.

Coaches don't have to be firebreathers to deliver a message to their players, as Matt Eberflus demonstrates.

Since taking over the Chicago Bears, the 51-year-old has made one thing consistently clear.

The rule of thumb is the rule of thumb. Every player on the roster will be evaluated in the same manner. All of them have a lot riding on them.

His closing lecture at the end of the minicamps emphasised how serious he is about this. Before taking questions, Eberflus explained what he witnessed in practise and why he's encouraged by the development.

The kudos, though, came with a clear message for the athletes. They can't afford to waste the next month and a half. If they arrive out of shape for training camp, they will not be welcomed with open arms.

From the moment he took over, Eberflus has maintained this approach. He remarked in his first press conference that players should be prepared to run. He wants a football team that is speedy and well-conditioned.

That technique could irritate some males. He comprehends why. It's difficult. Energy and intensity are in great demand. For some, the price is too steep. He expects some of the boys to be unable to handle it.

This is unquestionably by design. Championship teams aren’t occupied by players that are mentally and physically weak.
