PS1 Games On PS Plus Premium Japan Are NTSC 60Hz

Distinct areas received different versions of games, with somewhat different aesthetics, back in the days of the original PlayStation. PS1 games in Japan and North America were in the NTSC format at the time, which was known to fans.

As a result, games in the United States played somewhat smoother and quicker at 60Hz, whilst games in Europe operated at a slower 50Hz PAL frame rate. It wasn't all terrible, though; PAL games featured somewhat clearer images, but NTSC had the advantage in terms of picture speed.

PS1 games on the PS Plus Premium tier, which includes a large number of vintage titles, are only available in PAL 50Hz versions, which has caused some dismay.

The lack of a choice between PAL and NTSC versions appears to be a Sony error, but then again, game preservation hasn't been Sony's strong suit in the past.

However, it appears that Japanese PS Plus Premium customers will be able to play vintage PS1 games in NTSC 60Hz, such as Ape Escape (via Pushsquare).

This isn't unexpected given that it's the original Japanese version of the game, but it does raise the potential that this version may be released in North America as well.
