Esoteric Alteration Legendary Gem Diablo 3

In Diablo III, Esoteric Alteration is a Legendary Gem. It only drops from Greater Rift Guardians and may be socketed into Amulets and Rings. This gem was a Season Two-only item, however it began to disappear for regular characters after this season finished.
If the incoming damage is of any Elemental Damage type other than Physical, this gem reduces all unsaved damage that the bearer takes. Upgrades further boost the damage mitigation. It offers 60.0 percent non-physical damage mitigation and has a level maximum of 100.
When the character has less than half life, it additionally raises all non-Physical resistances at level 25.
While resistance boost directly stacks with other comparable improvements, damage reduction is multiplicative rather than additive to other similar modifications.
This is one of five gems that provide defensive rather than offensive advantages, the others being Molten Wildebeest’s Gizzard, Mutilation Guard, Invigorating Gemstone, and Moratorium.
This gem may be particularly helpful to ranged classes, which often avoid close quarters fighting anyhow, since most physical attacks are melee.
Gem Properties
- Gain 10.0% non-Physical damage reduction.
- Upgrade: +0.5% damage reduction per Rank.
- While below half Life, your resistances to Cold, Fire, Lightning, Poison, and Arcane are increased by 75% (Requires Rank 25)
Esoteric Alteration Mechanics
This Legendary Gem reduces all non-Physical damage taken by 10%. You can only level this Gem to rank 100. Every upgrade will increase the damage reduction by another 0.5% up to a maximum of 60% total. The rank 25 bonus is one of the strongest in the game. It increases your resistance to Cold, Fire, Lightning, Poison and Arcane by 75% while below 50% Life. This secondary alone is about an additional 40% total damage reduction to non-Physical damage. Alltogether these 2 effects combine for approximately 75% total non-Physical damage reduction.
Esoteric Alteration Best Use
The #1 toughness Gem: Used by Supports and Damager Dealers alike. Can be super useful especially at lower Paragon levels early on in the Season, but is mostly outclassed in the endgame by offensive Gems or other supportive choices.

If you need extra Legendary Gems to level up, you can make the Rift Guardian in any Greater Rift drop a new Rank 0 Gem by removing all the Legendary Gems with the same name from your Equipment, Inventory and Stash.
The safest way to do that is to put them into the Inventory of different character.
